One Night in Paris,
Pt. 1
The clouds roll in. |
| |
|
|
You should already be comfortable with Layer
Masks before embarking on this tutorial.
In this tutorial we'll begin to set the mood of the
composition below on the left, by adding stormy clouds
and some color to a b/w image, like the one on the
right.

The Clouds |
|
|
 |
You should have an Eiffel Tower.tif image in your Photoshop Samples
folder. If not...
1. Save
this Eiffel Tower image to your hard drive.
Right-click (Win) / Control-click (Mac) on the this image.
|
| |
|
 |
2. Adjustment
Layer > Solid Color > Choose a deep red.
Click on this icon
in the layers palette to create an adjustment layer. From the
context menu choose Solid Color. Pick a deep red from the Color
Picker.
3. Layers
Palette > Blending Mode > Color.

|
| |
|
 |
4. You
should have something like this now.
|
| |
|
| |
5.Create
a New Layer
> Name it Clouds.
|
| |
|
 |
6. Default
Colors (D) > Switch (X) > Eyedropper > Sample red.
Use your eyedroper to get a dark red foreground color. You want
black as your background color.
Filter > Render > Clouds.
Layers Palette > Add a mask .
|
| |
|
 |
7.
Default Colors (D) > Switch Colors
(X).
Gradient Tool
(G) > Linear > White-Black.
Target the Layer
Mask Thumbnail > Zoom out (Ctrl + minus / Command +
minus) > Drag Vertical gradient (drag
a gradient from near the top of the image to past the bottom).
You should see the city lights and red stormy
clouds. The top half of the Eiffel Tower should be hidden in the
clouds. Let's unhide it a bit, next.
|
| |
|
 |
8. Paintbrush
(B) > 35 pixels > Opacity 23% > Default Colors (D).
Make sure your layer mask thumbnail
,
on the Clouds layer, is still targeted.
On the Canvas >
Click a few times around where the top of the tower should be.
You want it to look like the tower's in the clouds, just a bit.
|
| |
|
 |
9. Save
your file as a *.psd.
You have completed Part I.
The steps we've taken have set the mood for the design. Now it's
time to kick it up a notch, with some lightning!
