Perspective
Using The Free Transform Tool

In this tutorial, we'll create a perspective drop shadow on some text, from scratch, no effects or filters. This is a good introduction to perspective, creating reflections, and using the Free Transform Tool.

Get QuickTime to view all of this tutorial.

Tip!
Below are all the key combinations you can try with the Free Transform Tool .

Remember when doing these transformations, start to click + drag first with the Free Transform Tool on a point, then press and hold any of these modifier keys, while dragging.

Perspective Drop Shadow

1.Write some text in a bold typeface, with any fill color. I'm using: Impact > 63pt > Height 75%.

Now select your text with your selection tool .

2. Get your Reflect Tool .

Hold down ( Alt (Win) // Option (Mac) ), and click on the line that your text appears on. (See the image on the right).

In the dialog box, choose: Horizontal > 0° > Copy.

3. You should have something like this now.
If your reflection is not lined up like mine, now would be a good time to line it up.

4. Select your reflection and go:
Type > Create Outlines, or (Ctrl + Shift + O // Cmd + Shift + 0)

We had to break apart our reflection so it is no longer editable type, in order to complete the next step.

5. Get your Free Transform Tool .

Click on a bottom corner > Hold down (Ctrl + Alt + Shift // Cmd + Option + Shift) > Drag out horizontally.

6. Gradient Palette (F9) > Linear > -90° > black to white (or white to black).

Selection Tool (V) > Select your reflection.

7. Select your Gradient Tool .

Drag a vertical gradient across the selected text, so it looks like mine.

Try This!
If you like, now apply a skew to the shadow.

You may have to adjust individual letters in the shadow afterwards. So, zoom in close, use your Direct Selection Tool, and maybe a little skew, to make adjustments accordingly.

In Flash! If you know basic Flash, import your artwork from Step 7 and animate it. Try getting the shadow to kind of pan, or slide in.
