Black Corners atist Graph Nobel is the multitalented
young Canadian protege of
producer Doc (Res/Esthero/Raphael Siddiq). Born Christa Gonzales,
Graph knew early on that the arts were her calling - she has
performed in theater since her grade school years. Hailing
from Toronto, the half Spanish, half Trinidadian Graph has
developed a musical style that defies common category. She
is inspired by her influences of No Doubt, Blondie, Mos Def,
Garbage, WuTang, and Bob Marley .
Writing since she was 14yrs old, at 17 she went to the studio
for the first time with Canadian Juno award winning producer
2Rude. Around the same time she was also working with Canadian
hip-hop artist Kaos (Capitol Records). Then after years of
working with Doc, they went into the studio. She has recorded
a batch of songs that should rank among the most eclectic
yet cohesive pop records since Prince's "Sign Of The
Times". Combining her love of roots music, hip-hop and
alt-pop, her style is truly a hybrid without being forced.
Performing live is one Graph's greatest strengths. Playing
with a live band and DJ allows her to improvise, as she did
on several dates at the Black Lilly showcase (Roots/
Jazzyfatnastees/Jaguar) in New York @ the Wetlands.
Graph can't even imagine recording a song unless she can envision
it live on stage. "My whole theory of song writing is
that a true song lasts throughout time", says Graph.
Her songs are enduring, intelligent, thoughtful variations
on relationships and urban observations, taking a fresh approach
to tried themes.
Her music is hip-hop based with pop overtones, in the tradition
of other Canadian new school artists Saukrates, Nelly Furtado,
Esthero, New Deal,
BranVan2000, Glen Lewis and Jellystone, that will help change
the face of pop music.
